Vaigarai Publishing House is a simple effort of Jesuit Madurai Province to promote human values through publications. Do you know? With the efforts of St. Francis Xavier, S.J., the first printing house in Tamil Nadu was established in the southern coastal village, Punnaikkaayal in the 16th Century. Adiyaar Varalaaru – is the first Tamil book printed and published by Fr. Henry Henriquez, S.J. in the same century. The history of Tamil literature has a memorable and indelible space for Veeramaamunivar (Joseph Constantine Beschi, S.J. ) and Thatthuva Pothagar (Robert De Nobili, S.J. ). All these notable personalities were Jesuits contributing to the growth of print media in Tamil Nadu and Tamil literature. Following the footsteps of these pioneers, Veermaamunivar Writers Forum (Veeramaamunivar Ezhutthaazhar Kazhakam) was founded by Jesuit Madurai Province in 1961 to encourage the budding writers and promote publication works. Fr. C.K. Swamy, S.J. is a significant personality who sustained this forum till 1984.

As a natural evolution of Veeramaamunivar Writers Forum, Vaigarai Publishing House was established in 1984 at Beschi College, Dindigul. It had a humble beginning with the limited resources. In 2004, the present four-story modern building for the book shop was inaugurated in the main Road, Dindigul, for better visibility and accessibility. Later, Vaigarai opened its branch book shop in Tirchy. These shops house more than 10,000 books both from Vaigarai and other Publishers. Celebrating its Silver Jubilee in 2009, now Vaigarai is marching towards the completion of three decades.

All these years, it has journeyed in the company of many talented writers and thousands of readers and published more than 500 best–selling titles both in Tamil and English. Education, Spirituality, religion, motivation, personality development, literature, history, and social issues are some of the popular topics covered by Vaigarai. The regular publication of Value Education series, Valarum Ilamai in Tamil and Becoming Human in English, for the school-going students is an evident contribution to the promotion of human values. With the hall mark of ISBN (International Standard Book Number), Vaigarai maintains its commitment to quality books and affordable price. Have you heard about a 125-year old Tamil magainze ? This magazine has a unique history of witnessing three centuries and several generations. Yes, Vaigarai has been publishing a monthly magazine called 'Thoothan' for thousands of committed readers and the devotees of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Vaigarai is publishing Pathaigal, a bi-annual magazine meant for Jesuit friends and relatives.
